An Icon Reimagined — The 1991 WWF Costume Letter

A rare glimpse into the creative process behind Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat’s legendary 1991 WWF costume.

This original set includes two hand-drawn concept mock-ups illustrating the front and back design of his updated ring attire — paired with an official letter from the WWF Illustration Director, Adriana Wechsler, dated January 16, 1991. The correspondence, also cc’d to Vince McMahon, Pat Patterson, and J.J. Dillon, details design revisions and color considerations for Steamboat’s signature cape.

Together, these artifacts represent a defining moment in wrestling history — where imagination, craftsmanship, and performance merged to create one of the sport’s most iconic looks.

The Dragon’s Championship Boots — Worn in Victory Over Ric Flair

These original green leather boots were worn by Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat during his iconic victory over Ric Flair at the Chi-Town Rumble in Chicago on February 20, 1989 — the night he captured the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. Crafted for performance and showmanship, these boots became a symbol of Steamboat’s excellence and determination inside the ring.

The signature dragon patch, now one of the most recognizable symbols of his persona, was added later when Steamboat joined the WWE, evolving his look while honoring his roots as “The Dragon.”

A historic piece of wrestling heritage — preserved from one of the greatest rivalries of all time.
